SMA standard was one of the first fiber optic connector developped but the versatility of the SMA is still a great use for many industrial applications using a number of different fibers.
The SMA connector family has been adapted to most of the fibers types in diameters, coatings or specifications..
The assembly procedure also offers a variety of possibilities according to the user’s needs (crimp and cleave, glue and polishing, glue and crimp, power, sterilizable, etc.)
The so called standard SMA is in fact a puzzle designed to fit all fibers types of all different diameters, coatings and assembly solutions.
Consequently the choice must take into account the following elements:
• Ferrule : a machined metallic part adapted to the most standard fiber diameters or specially drilled for the others (from 125μm to 2mm.).The hole diameter is normally equal to the cladding diameter +5μm.
• The screw cap : round, hexagonal (or mixt on request).
• The retension : it must be adapted to the external protection of the fiber. Very simple for bare fiber or 900μm buffered, with a crimping ferrule for cables 2.5mm to 3mm., or very sophisticated for metallic protection.
