Description

HCS fibers are step index fibers with large silica core. They are used in applications demanding high mechanical performances. They are the best choice for industrial data links and factory automation, trains and military applications. The large core references (up to 1500 μm) will be used for power laser transmission.

When people discuss fiber optics, they usually refer to singlemode or graded-index optical fiber.These silica fiber types are very appropriate for high-speed data communication over long distances. But step-index silica fibers are the preferred choice for low cost, short distance datalinks.Their large core size permits the use of low cost transmitter/receiver technology.The fiber’s high tensile strength allows easy field terminations and makes possible the use of low cost devices and connectors.

The most commonly used fiber is HCS (Hard Clad Silica). HCS fiber provides an excellent balance of performance characteristics.Their large core diameter and high numerical aperture (0,37) provide effiscient coupling to sources. For example considering the size of a 200 μm core HCS fiber and it’s 0.37 N.A. it is possible to couple ten times more power from an LED than with a 62.5/125 fiber and about five time more than with a 100/140 fiber.

   
 
 

Traction & Mechanical resistance

Pure silica has in theory a very strong resistance of about 2000 Kpsi. Unfortunately fibers have surface flaws due to the perform and drawing process. These flaws generate a weakness in humid environment. When a fiber is bent or under traction chemical atomic links are progressively broken generating static fatigue.

In the middle of the seventies, the company ENSIGN BICKFORD invented a hard polymer material with interesting properties. Applied on a pure silica surface it creates chemical links which are improving significantly the mechanical resistance.

In HCS fibers this polymer applied during the draw process is used to obtain an excellent mechanical resistance and also as the cladding material. The proprietary hard polymer not only acts as a cladding to guide light down the fiber’s silica core, it also acts as a strength enhancer. This polymeric material forms “bridge bonds” that heal (passivate) small flaws on the surface of the silica; it is virtually impermeable to moisture and impurities. Fiber strength is greatly enhanced and static fatigue significantly retarded.

Tighter bend radius are possible. HCS fiber can withstand one-tenth of an inch bend for 20 years.

 
 
 

Applications

HCS fibers are step index with low OH silica core. These fibers are ideally suited for use with both 650 and 850 nm active devices.They are used in applications demanding high mechanical performances.

HCS200 is the best choice for industrial data links and factory automation, trains and military applications over distances of 100 m to 3 km. The 200 and 400 sized fibers are compatible with crimp and cleave termination.

MEDICAL APPLICATIONS                                                                                        

HCS fibers are totaly adapted to medical probes construction. Their materials are USP Class VI non toxic, biocompatible and sterilizable by ETO or by autoclave. These fibers are very easy to be polished or cleaved and because their high resistant polymer cladding crimping can be done directly on the fiber. These possibilities are very interisting to manufacture single use medical probes.
