Description

Whatever the type of fiber, singlemode or multimode, graded index or step index, it will have to operate in a given environment. 
Consequently fiber coating will have to be carefully selected because it will dramatically influence the performances and life time in some environments.
Note that it is necessary to make a distinction between the coating, either primary or secondary, which is applied during the drawing process and any other protective structures such as tubes or cables which are generally designed and manufactured under the cable maker responsibility. 

Commonly used materials are accrylate, ETFE, and time to time Nylon.
• Accrylate is the most common coating of singlemode and graded index fibers
• ETFE is currently used to protect silica /silica fibers. It is soft and easy to strip but it's temperature range is -65°C to +125°C. 

Two versions of special harsh environments coating are proposed:
Polyimide coating for high temperature resistant fibers
Carbon + Polyimide for hermeticity against hydrogen penetration and aging. (Hermetic Fibers)

Hermetic coating has been developed to increase dramatically mechanical performances of fibers. Hermeticity is obtained by a thin layer of carbon plus a Polyimide or acrylate coating for mechanical protection. 
The carbon layer is directly applied on the silica cladding during the drawing process. This operation provides an hermetic seal against moisture at all temperature.
The micro flaws in the silica surface are sealed and their propagation are stopped when the fibers are exposed to water vapor or permanent stress. Typically the N value (characterizing the fatigue static resistance) is above 100 compared to 20 with acrylate coated fibers or 30 with Polyimide coated.
This carbon layer is only a few hundreds of Angstroms. It is not strippable and connectors are mounted directly on this coating.

Corrosivity : >100
Proof test : 50,100 or 200 kpsi

Fibers available with Hermetic Coating :
• Singlemode 1310 GeoFibers with NA : 0.11 or 0.16 (Carbon + Polyimide)
• Singlemode 1310 with NA : 0.16 (Carbon + Acrylate) 
• GI50/125 (Carbon + Polyimide)
